James "Cool Papa" Bell, born in Starkville, was renowned as the fastest man to ever play baseball. During his career from 1922 to 1950, he played for or managed teams primarily in the Negro Leagues. He never hit below .300 in his career, and in 1974 he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
