Smith's Basin was named for Ezekiel Smith around 1825. He and his brother Israel operated a store and tavern in the hamlet. At one time the neighborhood had several hotels, stores, a school, a post office, a church, and a railroad station. A canal boat basin here was used to load lime for shipment to New York City.
