Taylor Ridge is a forty-mile mountain ridge in northwestern Georgia and the state’s most northwestern ridge, running past Summerville, Trion, LaFayette, and Ringgold in the Ridge and Valley region. At Ringgold Gap it becomes White Oak Mountain, part of the same landform, and it belongs to the Armuchee Ridges. Named for Cherokee chieftain Richard Taylor, it is also locally called Taylor’s Ridge. Its sandstone western face and chert eastern cliffs create differing soils, sunlight, and wildlife habitats. A Civil War skirmish occurred here on November 7, 1863. Today the ridge is used for hiking and outdoor recreation, mainly through the Pinhoti Trail.
