Bannack was on the Lewis and Clark Trail in 1806, became the first important gold camp in 1862, was the scene of vigilante activities in 1863, served as the first capital of the Territory of Montana from 1864 to 1865, and was the first county seat of Beaverhead County from 1864 to 1881, remembered in gratitude to the early pioneers who founded the Commonwealth.
