Peter Horry was born March 13, 1743, in Prince George’s Parish, Winyah, and died February 28, 1815. In December, 1802, part of Georgetown District was made into a new district by the General Assembly of South Carolina and named Horry District in his honor because his brigade included the militia of the new district. He displayed auspicious character as an officer in the American Revolutionary War.
