Scaled Composites, for Beechcraft after Raytheon purchased Scaled Composites, developed the Model 143 Triumph as a twin-engine cabin aircraft designed by Burt Rutan to be adaptable for piston, turboprop, or turbofan power. Two airframes were begun, but only one was completed, using two Williams FJ-44 turbofan engines. This all-composite, pressurized 8-seat corporate aircraft made its first flight on July 12, 1988, also the first flight test of the FJ-44. A test program of more than 100 flight hours confirmed the performance and operating characteristics of both the airplane and its engines. The aircraft was tested above 41,000 feet and up to 0.69 Mach, while pressurization systems were developed, installed, and tested, handling and performance tests were conducted, and extensive engine testing was completed. Problems with the FAA certification process for the first all-composite aircraft delayed and ultimately canceled the program. After flight testing ended, the aircraft was retired and mounted at Mojave Airport in front of the Scaled Composites facilities, and in 2006 Burt Rutan donated it to the airpark.
