Conchas Lake is a long reservoir in northeastern New Mexico formed when Conchas Dam was completed on the Canadian River in 1939 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Extending about 25 miles at roughly 4,200 feet elevation and covering about 9,600 acres, it transformed part of the river valley into one of the region’s notable inland lakes. Its shores include Conchas Lake State Park, divided into north and south areas, with nine public boat ramps. Known for fishing and boating, the lake remains both a recreational destination and a lasting example of New Deal-era water infrastructure, with an airport and seaplane base reinforcing that role.
