In Cameron Parish, Hurricane Rita killed no one, but 38 of its 40 cemeteries were breached, and more than 340 caskets and their remains were torn from the ground and scattered into marshes, tree tops, fields, and canals as far as 30 miles away. The loss struck some of Cameron Parish's most treasured dead and began a long journey for them, their families, and those who recovered them, with the hope that they might again rest in peace.
