After World War Two, old car chassis and motors were readily available, and in the 1950s the styling of cars reflected the new wealth and confidence of a growing America. Tailfins, chrome, and flash made cars attractive and turned them into important status symbols, with the 1957 Chevy becoming one of the most popular examples of a 1950s classic car. For many young people cruising centered on drive-ins and dating, while for others it centered on the car itself, as the 1950s became a time when cars were chopped, rebuilt, and worked on as a hobby. Enthusiasts did their own work, rebuilt motors, and turned these labors of love into showpieces, while custom carmakers such as Gene Winfield gained popularity for lowering cars, adding Appleton spotlights, chopping, hammer-welding enhanced body parts, and creating vivid shiny paint jobs, and Winfield's fame spread around the world. American Graffiti featured notable cars of the period, including John Milner's customized canary yellow 1932 Ford Coupe, Bob Falfa's 1955 Chevy Bel Air, Curt Henderson's dream girl's 1956 white Thunderbird, Steve Bolander's 1958 Impala, Laurie Henderson's Edsel, the Pharaohs' 1951 Mercury, and Kurt Henderson's 2-cylinder Citroen Deux Cheveaux. The 1932 Ford Coupe became known as the Deuce Coupe and is one of the most identified classic car modifications in the world. George Lucas sought a car that would represent the age of drag racing, drawing on earlier work with Allen Grant on a bright yellow Cobra with a black racing stripe, and the THX-138 plates nodded to his earlier science fiction film THX-1138. Lucas' car club, the Ecurie AWOL, favored foreign cars such as AC Cobras, Porsches, Fiats, and other modified European cars, and Lucas' own Fiat Bianchina was chopped and modified for racing, while Terry "The Toad" Fields had only a scooter. Today, classic Fords, Chevys, Mercurys, and other cars are still being created in Modesto and Turlock, and the cars of American Graffiti, when thoroughly restored, are becoming increasingly rare, expensive, and sought after around the world.
