Piney Grove Flatwoods Natural Area Preserve is a 446-acre preserve west of Wakefield in southeastern Virginia, dedicated in 2021 as the state’s sixty-sixth natural area preserve. It is part of a larger 10,000-acre protected landscape that includes Big Woods State Forest, Big Woods Wildlife Management Area, and Piney Grove Preserve. The area protects habitat for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker and other rare amphibians, plants, and fish, while supporting a wider effort to restore the region’s pre-Colonial forest landscape. Managed by The Nature Conservancy, it is being restored through prescribed burning, selective cutting, and longleaf pine reintroduction, with limited public access by prior arrangement.
