Near here stood John Jermain's Mill, built in 1793 and powered by a ditch dredged from ponds farther uphill in an effort to make Otter Pond commercially profitable. The mill failed, as did other attempts to commercialize the pond, until Mrs. Russell Sage purchased the pond and incorporated it within Mashashinuet Park.
