The Don Harrington Discovery Center in Amarillo, Texas, is a nonprofit science museum and planetarium that combines hands-on science education with stewardship of the Helium Centennial Time Columns Monument outside its building. Named for philanthropist Don Harrington, the center relies heavily on community support and participates in national reciprocal museum networks. The stainless steel monument, designed in 1967 and built in 1968, marks the centennial of helium’s discovery and serves as both a time capsule structure and a sundial. Moved to the museum in 1982, it has had capsules opened in 1993 and 2018, with others scheduled for 2068 and 2968.
