On April 2, 1865, thousands of Union and Confederate soldiers clashed here in fighting that helped determine the fate of Petersburg and Richmond. The route passes many original features of the battlefield, including the Hart House and some of America’s best preserved Civil War fortifications, on ground where the enemy broke through Confederate lines and where Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant called the result one of the greatest victories of the war.
