Settled in the 1880s by Czech immigrants, the community was first called Sebesta's Corner. In 1895 it was named Snook for John Snook, who helped secure a post office. It soon had a one-room school, a masova schuza, a cooperative store, and a lodge for the Czechoslovak Benevolent Society.
