Greenbrier State Park is a public recreation area on South Mountain in western Maryland, about three miles northeast of Boonsboro, centered on a forty-two-acre man-made lake. Created in 1963, it was expanded with state funding between 1964 and 1978 to add campgrounds, picnic areas, a beach, roads, trails, parking, an interpretive center, and other day-use facilities. Greenbrier Lake, with its one-thousand-foot beach, swimming area, fishing, boat launch, and rentals, is a main attraction. The park also offers ten maintained trails, including access to the Appalachian Trail, along with hunting, a year-round visitor center, and a seasonal nature center. In 1995, rare albino deer were spotted there, and in 2008 a federal grant funded box turtle culverts under Keadle Road.
