This home had many owners, but its most famous resident was world-renowned writer Alex Haley (1921-1992), author of the 1976 book Roots: The Saga of an American Family and The Autobiography of Malcolm X. Haley and his wife Dr. Myran Lewis Haley purchased the home in 1990, and they also owned a farm on the outskirts of Clinton. Other notable Clinton residents who lived here included Nestor Grotelueschen (1900-1987) and Myrtle Grotelueschen (1901-1971), who were instrumental in establishing organized recreational activities for Clinton's youth during World War II, leading to the construction of the Memorial Rec Center in 1945. In 1950, Russell Moxley (1908-1987), treasurer of Magnet Mills and a Clinton city alderman, and Clarice Moxley (1911-2005) purchased the home.
