In 1838, on this spot, the first Constitutional Convention of the State of Florida assembled, marking the birth of the state. It affirmed that all men are equal before the law and have certain inalienable rights, including enjoying and defending life and liberty, acquiring, possessing and protecting property, and pursuing happiness and obtaining safety.
