Roanoke Mountain in Virginia rises as a scenic high point above the Roanoke region, about two miles south of the Roanoke River and one mile east of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Rather than a remote backcountry summit, it is known for easy access by a one-way loop road branching from the parkway. Along its summit ridge, two overlooks provide wide views west over the city of Roanoke and north across the surrounding landscape. Near the east end of the ridge, a crater-like formation considered geologically puzzling adds an unusual feature. The mountain was earlier known as Yellow Mountain.
