The University of California Botanical Garden, a 34-acre garden in Strawberry Canyon above the Berkeley campus, occupies land of the Chochenyo-speaking Ohlone known as xučyun, or Huichin. Founded in 1890 after earlier campus plantings, it moved to its present site in 1925 under Thomas Harper Goodspeed and J.W. Gregg, then expanded through new themed landscapes and Civilian Conservation Corps construction. Built in part through Berkeley collecting expeditions around the world, it now ranks among the nation’s most diverse plant collections, with strong holdings of rare and endangered species. As both public landscape and scientific resource, it supports research, conservation, education, and wildlife habitat.
