Boyd Cave is a well-preserved lava tube in Deschutes National Forest on the northern flank of Newberry Volcano near Bend, part of the same lava flow system as nearby Skeleton Cave. Formed between 75,000 and 400,000 years ago, it retains clear pahoehoe textures and has seen little interior collapse, though parts of its roof are unusually thin. Entered by a stairway through a skylight, most of the passage is walkable except for a short crawl, making it a relatively accessible example of the volcanic cave landscape created by Newberry’s lava flows. Originally called Coyote Butte Cave, it later took its present name.
