South Yuba River State Park protects about 22 miles of the South Yuba River Canyon in the Sierra Nevada, extending from Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park to Bridgeport. Covering more than 11,000 acres under both California State Parks and Tahoe National Forest management, it is known for granite ledges, riparian stretches, swimming holes, wildflowers, and trails including the wheelchair-accessible Independence Trail. The park also preserves a landscape shaped by the California Gold Rush, when immigrants came here in 1849 and the early 1850s. Mining sites, gold panning demonstrations, and historic bridges such as the 1862 Bridgeport Covered Bridge and 1865 Purdon Crossing connect the canyon’s scenery with its transportation and mining past.
