Twin Lakes Bog State Natural Area
Nature
Twin Lakes Bog State Natural Area in north-central Wisconsin preserves an unusually intact northern wetland landscape within the Chequamegon National Forest northwest of Medford. Centered on a tamarack swamp between North Twin Lake and South Twin Lake, it includes open bog vegetation, quaking mats around three small interior bog lakes, and a surrounding upland forest of second-growth hardwoods dominated by sugar maple and red oak. Labrador tea, bog laurel, leatherleaf, sedges, ferns, sundews, and abundant pink ladyslipper give the site notable botanical value. Its contrast of floating bog, swamp, and hardwood forest led the U.S. Forest Service to designate it a Research Natural Area in 1989.
