Around 1887, brothers Harrison and Joshua Hinson, along with Joshua's oldest son Oscar, came to this place seeking land to homestead. They brought five hogs, explored the land, released the hogs, and returned to their homes in Jackson County several miles north of the area now known as Chipley. When they later returned and saw that the hogs had flourished, they moved their families here, and the community that became known as Hinson's Cross Roads prospered and grew. Several stores opened, including a grocery store owned by John T. Harrell, Willie Hinson, and David Sellers, and May Hinson Bevis operated a millinery shop selling bonnets and hats. The community also had a grammar school, and the Hinson family founded Pleasant Grove Methodist Church. Harrison Hinson and his wife Sara Williams Hinson had seven children, while Joshua Hinson and his wife, Carry Jensie Williams Hinson, who was Sara's sister, had twelve children. Over the years, these large families prospered and spread throughout the world, while this place remained the root of their beginning.
