Icehouse Bottom was a prehistoric Native American site on the Little Tennessee River in Monroe County, Tennessee, now submerged beneath Tellico Lake. Excavations showed that indigenous people used it as a semi-permanent base camp by about 7500 BC in the Early Archaic period, making it one of Tennessee’s oldest known habitation areas. Floodplain deposits preserved layers of occupation containing hearths, projectile points, and netsinkers, and archaeologists believe the camp included several dozen dwellings. Later Woodland remains, including early maize and pottery, point to broad exchange networks reaching Ohio, North Carolina, and Georgia and suggest the site may have served as a manufacturing or distribution center.
