Indian Echo Caverns, a limestone show cave near Hershey and Hummelstown, has been known since at least the 1700s and likely served nearby Susquehannock people as shelter and storage earlier. Its two passages meet in the Indian Ballroom, and its still-growing formations have made it known as a living cave. William Wilson, the “Pennsylvania Hermit,” lived there from 1802 to 1821 after withdrawing from society. Opened as a commercial attraction in 1929 with electric lights and walkways, the cave later drew explorers, tourists, and even brief country and western concerts. It remained a popular destination into the late twentieth century despite repeated flood closures.
