The 1846 Applegate Trail, also known as the South Road to Oregon, heads westward along the banks of Fletcher Creek, leaves the creek after about two miles, and then swings around the southern flank of Blue Mountain. This route across what is known today as the "Devil's Garden" was often mentioned in emigrant diaries as a very rocky and rough road.
