Coochie Brake is a cypress swamp in Louisiana between Verda and Atlanta that covers more than 700 acres. This wildlife-rich wetland, also known as a brake, is home to alligators, deer, and large cypress trees. It also holds a place in local history and folklore through traditions linking it to a time when it was a Spanish fort. Once owned by J. M. Ferguson, the swamp is now owned by the state.
