The Safety Harbor site in Philippe Park, Florida, is identified with Tocobaga, capital of the Tocobaga people encountered by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. It is the type site for the Safety Harbor culture and includes the largest remaining mound in the Tampa Bay area: a large circular temple mound built of alternating shell and sand, along with a smaller burial mound and two shell middens. The site is archaeologically significant for its link to the Tocobaga and for showing southernmost Mississippian influence in Florida, as well as pottery traits shared with Fort Walton culture. Likely devastated by European diseases, the community probably abandoned the site by about 1700.
