One-quarter mile southeast, several log structures were built in 1837 and later joined together, with later buildings of handmade brick added. Enlargement to the present form was made by Col. John Armfield in 1857. In antebellum days the courtyard was the scene of varied diversions and activities, including the holding of missionary services by Episcopal Bishops Otey and Polk.
