Lockport took its name from locks built in 1850, ruins of which survived a crevasse in 1917 near this site. An earlier settlement, called Longueville by 1835, stood here when William Fields donated land for a canal later known as the Company Canal, which connected Bayou Terrebonne with New Orleans across the lakes and Bayou Lafourche. After the locks were built, the settlement's name changed, and the town was incorporated as Lockport in 1899.
