Ernest Hemingway lived here from 1931 to 1939 and reached his writing studio by a catwalk that once crossed the gallery roof from the master bedroom porch. He wrote there daily from 6am until noon, producing about 500 to 700 words each day, and seventy percent of his works were written during the nine years he lived in this house. Among the works he wrote while living in Key West were A Farewell To Arms, Death In the Afternoon, Winner Take Nothing, Green Hills of Africa, To Have and Have Not, The Fifth Column and the First Forty-nine Stories, and captions for For Whom the Bell Tolls. The catwalk to the studio was destroyed by Hurricane 7 on September 21, 1948, was never replaced, and after its loss a matching rail was welded into place to form the railing seen today.
