Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park spans thirty-four islands and peninsulas across Boston Harbor, joining a national recreation area with a state park under a partnership rather than federal ownership. The islands hold deep Indigenous history, with archaeological evidence of seasonal use for thousands of years and a lasting memory of the forced internment of Native people during King Philip’s War. After colonization, they became important for defense, navigation, industry, and institutions, leaving landmarks such as Fort Warren and Boston Light. Protected beginning in the 1970s and formally established in 1996, the park also preserves varied coastal habitats, abundant birdlife, and occasional marine mammals.
