The Roebling Suspension Bridge was the first bridge to span the Ohio River, connecting Kentucky and Ohio. John Augustus Roebling was the engineer, and Amos Shinkle was president of the Covington-Cincinnati Bridge Co. Its formal opening was celebrated on Jan. 1, 1867. A prototype for the framed Brooklyn Bridge, the Suspension Bridge remained open during the tragic flood of 1937. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
