Swan Lake Wildlife Area in Columbia County, Wisconsin, is a 2,466-acre protected tract assembled beginning in 1963 for hunting, outdoor recreation, and protection of the Fox River watershed. Named for the 407-acre Swan Lake within its boundaries, the area includes extensive wetlands, broad cattail marshes, grassland, oak woods, bottomland hardwoods, tamarack, shrub wetland, and upland conifer. Its waters and marshes support fish such as muskellunge, northern pike, largemouth bass, and walleye, while birds including black tern, turkey, and shorebirds use the habitat. Managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, it remains both a refuge and a recreation area despite pressure from invasive species.
