Brave men who gave much to their cause during the great conflict lie buried in this ground, while others rest in mass graves near battlefields, in lonely unmarked graves, or in untended cemeteries across the South. The fifty-seven honored here made Collierville their home, and most were members of Wigfall Gray's Company, which was formed in this community and whose men returned after the war to become valued citizens. One was an unknown Confederate soldier who fell here during the Battle of Collierville. These men campaigned far from home against an overwhelming invading army and were remembered as southern patriots of indomitable spirit and honor who survived defeat despite a vindictive occupying force that plundered their property and stole their suffrage.
