Mayfield was first considered a settlement in 1873 when pioneers brought their families from Gunnison to occupy log cabins they had erected on the north side of Twelve-Mile Creek. In 1875, a townsite called New London on the south side provided for several young families from Ephraim. On July 4, 1877, a union was effected when the Mayfield LDS Ward of the Sanpete Stake of Zion was organized. The name Mayfield was chosen because of the natural beauty of Arropeen Valley in Maytime. Indians called this area Aw-wan-ah-voo and revered it as a place of ancient fortification. An heirloom bell rang out for curfew, warnings, celebrations, and called children to school. Volunteer-manned firefighting equipment served the community's needs before 1960.
