From Titanakh, Table Rocks, the Takelma people looked out over a homeland divided between two major groups, with the Dagelma living to the west and the Latgawa extending eastward. They gathered grass seed, acorns, and camas, hunted elk and deer, fished for salmon and trout, and traded and married with nearby tribal families. In 1827, a Hudson’s Bay Company party led by Peter Skene Ogden entered the Rogue Valley, and within a generation settlers and miners occupied the valleys, cleared and plowed the land, and dug streambanks for gold. The Takelma fought fiercely for their homeland through both diplomacy and warfare, but in 1856 the U.S. Army defeated the native peoples, and survivors were removed to the Grande Ronde and Siletz reservations in northwestern Oregon. From Table Rocks they watched their ancestral world fall apart, and today their descendants still keep a watchful eye on their homeland in the shadow of Titanakh.
