On September 11, 2001, terrorists carried out the deadliest attack ever on American soil, striking New York City, Washington D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Emergency personnel responded that day, and hundreds of first responders lost their lives while thousands more were severely injured. American Airlines Flight 11 and United Flight 175 took off from Logan Airport in Boston, were hijacked in flight, and were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City; the resulting fires led to both towers collapsing, killing and injuring thousands. American Airlines Flight 77 took off from Dulles Airport in Washington D.C. with 64 people on board, was hijacked, and was flown into the Pentagon, killing an additional 125 people on the ground. United Flight 93 took off from Newark International Airport in New Jersey with 38 passengers and a crew of 7, was hijacked, and after passengers who had learned of the other attacks fought back, it crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing everyone on board; it was believed to have been headed toward another target in Washington, D.C. Westborough residents Robin Kaplan and Linda George were among those killed when American Airlines Flight 11 was hijacked and flown into the north tower of the World Trade Center, and these attacks marked the start of the War on Terror.
