Founded in 1926 by Dr. Robert Abbe in Bar Harbor, Maine, the Abbe Museum has grown from an early archaeological museum into a major nonprofit museum and archive centered on Wabanaki Nations’ heritage, living cultures, and homelands. With sites in downtown Bar Harbor and at Sieur de Monts Spring in Acadia National Park, it holds more than 50,000 objects spanning roughly 12,000 years of Native history in Maine, including an especially important basketry collection. In recent years it has gained national attention for centering Indigenous authority, consulting Wabanaki Tribal Nations, and reshaping governance, exhibitions, and programming around living Wabanaki perspectives.
