William Proctor, born in Fayette Co, PA in 1793, built this historic pre-Civil War house. He served in the PA Militia in the War of 1812 and married Mary Watson in May of 1825 in Clark Co, IN. In March of 1826, he and Absolom Wood purchased the property from Malachi Monk; they had married sisters. William was postmaster here from Jan. 1835 to July 1852, when the post office moved to Marengo. The property also served as a stage and mail route from Leavenworth to Indianapolis and from New Albany to Vincennes. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The William Proctor House and 7 acres of land were donated to the Crawford County Historical and Genealogical Society by the town of Marengo in Dec. 2004, and restoration was completed in 2018 with grants from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs, the Community Foundation of Crawford County, the Efroymson Family Fund, a fund of Central Indiana Community, as well as numerous private donations.
