Springwater National Wildlife Refuge
Nature
Springwater National Wildlife Refuge in Emmons County, North Dakota, is managed as part of Long Lake National Wildlife Refuge. It is a limited-interest refuge, one of a type established in the 1930s and 1940s as waterfowl populations declined and New Deal conservation programs expanded during the Great Depression. At Springwater, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manages wildlife habitat through an easement on privately owned land, regulating water levels and restricting hunting while leaving ownership in private hands. The refuge is not open to the public, although wildlife may be viewed from nearby public roads.
