Methodist worship at Fountain Head began after E.F. Sevier, grandson of Gov. John Sevier, arrived in the area in 1824 as a circuit rider. By 1825 a plot of ground had been secured and Fountain Head became a preaching place. A log meeting house was built about 1828, followed by a white frame church in 1845. In 1851 Fountain Head Methodist Episcopal Church South purchased the Fountain Head Campground, a 12 acre wooded grove with a large spring. The church, campground, hotel, nearby lake, and the Dummy line train helped make Fountain Head a popular resort by 1891. In 1892 a red brick church was built under the new name Fountain City Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The campground, used from 1833 to 1885, was remembered in an 1869 newspaper account as a peaceful postwar scene of white tents, wagons, and buggies, with early devotions, two daytime services, and an evening service by candlelight, and with 2000 attending on Sunday. That campground is now Fountain City Park.
