Claytor Lake State Park is a 472-acre Virginia park on Claytor Lake in Pulaski County, part of a 4,500-acre reservoir on the New River created by Claytor Dam. Built by Appalachian Power Company for hydroelectric generation, the dam and lake were named for William Graham Claytor of Roanoke, who supervised their construction. The park’s setting reflects the region’s power-development history while serving as a major recreation area with swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, camping, cabins, and a marina. It also includes the Haven B. Howe House, a Nature Exhibit Center focused on wildlife habitat and a historic property added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.
