Magnolia Church stood in the middle of some of the heaviest fighting of the battle, with the center of Brig. Gen. Martin Green's Confederate brigade posted there. Union troops under Brig. Gens. Carr, Benton, and Hovey and Col. Stone fought the determined Confederate forces for almost five hours. The church, where the Confederates placed their first line of defense, is no longer standing, and only the brick foundation and the cistern remain.
