The Poetry and Nature Trail at The Frost Place was begun in 1997. When Frost lived here, almost all the land was meadow, but over the years it changed dramatically as, like much of the surrounding farmland, it was allowed to revert to nature. In 2007, two dramatic windstorms knocked down approximately 60% of the canopy of the forested area, damaging the trail and setting back the previous eight years of development. Almost all of the 175 native perennials that had been planted were lost. Since then, restoration has been ongoing under the guidance of a forester, with downed trees cleared and the trail rebuilt and resurfaced. Frost botanized all his life, walking through the mountains, meadows, and trails of New Hampshire, and his connection to this place, its flora and land, and New Hampshire is central to much of his work.
