Fillmore was settled in 1851, and before the end of that first year the pioneers had erected a log schoolroom inside the fort with split-log seats and a dirt roof and floor. In 1854, an adobe church was built that also served as a school. In 1867, three small school buildings were erected, including this one, the first building financed by the taxpayers. Its contractors were Dellie Webb and Ova Peterson, and its builders were Horace and James Owens, Nat Baldwin, Lewis Tarbuck, John Ashman, James and Ralph Rowley, Hans and Christian Hanson, and John Powell.
