Dr. Gerald S. Brinton, a longtime resident of New Cumberland, served many years as Curriculum Director of the West Shore School District and was first and foremost an accomplishment, caring teacher known nationally as an expert in the Civil War. He was a driven academic, humble, and intensely dedicated to education and the betterment of society. Brinton was very involved with the Cumberland County Historical Society and the Harrisburg Civil War Round Table. In 1975, he headed a group of students and excavated the basement of the Benjamin House, searching for evidence of "The Underground Railroad." He was a founding father of the Benjamin House Project, dedicated July 4, 1976, as the New Cumberland Public Library, and he also served as President of the Library Board. Gerald was an outstanding community leader and was awarded a place on The Path of Leadership in The Peiffer Memorial Arboretum and Nature Preserve on August 2, 2020.
