Broad Mountain, or Broad Ridge, is a long, steep-faced, anthracite-bearing ridge in eastern Pennsylvania’s Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians, stretching about 14 miles through the Lehigh Valley coal region. Extending from the Lehigh Gorge to the Little Schuylkill River, it helped shape the area’s drainage, with most runoff flowing to the Lehigh River while its western reaches form part of a watershed divide. Its mostly flat ridgeline, resembling the region’s culm banks, reflects the coal country landscape. More than a single summit, Broad Mountain mattered for how it influenced settlement, transportation routes, and industrial development across this part of Pennsylvania.
