The first New Bridge, erected in 1745, was a strategic crossing during the Revolution and was used by Washington's Army during the 1776 retreat. In 1888/89, the wooden span was replaced by this iron swing-bridge, now the oldest such bridge of its kind in New Jersey. It was placed on the New Jersey Register on May 22, 1989, and on the National Register on July 5, 1989.
