Zachariah C. Neahr, born December 9, 1830, and died July 21, 1903, was a carpenter by trade who lived in Canajoharie and was a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor for Civil War service as a private on September 11, 1890. Frank Schubert, born in Germany on January 12, 1841, and died in Canajoharie on December 24, 1920, was part owner of the Sticht and Schubert Shoe store from 1877 to 1920 and was a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor for Civil War service as a 2nd lieutenant on May 10, 1865. Since its creation in 1861 and to this day, these are the only two M.O.H. winners in Montgomery County, New York.
